KODAK, the world’s leading camera manufacturer, has released Kodak Smile Classic that brings together instant camera and printer in a single device. Also known as a camera printer, it is undoubtedly an innovative way to perpetuate memorable moments.

The Smile Classic combines a classic design and sophisticated technology. Empowered by wireless connectivity, it lets you print directly from smartphones or tablets via a robust Bluetooth connection. And don’t forget ZINK technology that makes every shot from your camera long-lasting.

Retro Style, Colorful Design

Retro Style, Colorful Design

My first impression of this portable printer is nostalgic, classic, and stylish. The retro design gives a throwback that reminds you of your father’s camera from the ’90s. The sturdy plastic casing makes it durable yet lightweight.

Measuring 7.5 inches by 6.5 inches by 3 inches and weighing about 1 pound, this isn’t a pocket printer but it can go easily into your bag. On the front side, which is higher than the rear side, it houses the lens and flash. Under the camera, a wide output slot will emit your captured photos.

A thing that I like about this printer is that it doesn’t come with too many buttons. It only features a ten-second timer button at the top and a power latch on the left side. The power latch is connected to a viewfinder that is housed at its top.

A micro USB port and microSD card slot are embedded on the right side. If you wonder how to open the paper tray, go to the back and you will figure it out. To load ink paper, you have to lift the gadget and open the bottom lid. That’s where the paper tray is located.

The Kodak Smile Classic comes with double functions—camera and printer. It is empowered by a 16MP camera, which is a big upgrade from its predecessor, the Kodak Smile that offers a 5MP camera. Once you capture photos, the printer enables you to print instantly from the device.

Much to my surprise, this digital camera is able to produce large photos, even the largest among Kodak print collections. Thanks to the 16-megapixel camera that lets you print 3.51 inches by 4.25 inches photos with impressive results.

It also features automatic focus, even though it doesn’t really work well for moving objects. For a better photo-taking experience, it supports 10-second self-timer that comes with a series of beeps. This is how you can find out when the camera capture your photos.

How about the printer? It features ZINK technology that supports cartridge-free printing. Instead of using ink cartridges, ribbons, or toners, Smile Classic uses high quality photo paper on which captured moments will be printed.

Digital Camera and Printer Outputs

As this gadget has two functionalities, I will tell you the outputs both from the digital camera and the printer. The 16MP camera produces a little bit of lackluster images—but this is completely forgivable especially if you love the charm of vintage photography.

When I checked the digital files on my smartphone, the details were a bit smudged. Some other photos that I took were pink-hued and I just couldn’t figure it out. I came to the conclusion that it might be ideal for a recreational photographer but it’s not the case for a pro photographer who expects vivid images.

Apart from that, the Smile Classic comes with a good printer. I was pleased with its print quality as it came with good details and colors. The ability to print large photos is a plus point for this portable printer, making it prominent among smaller digital cameras with printers.

Of course, you cannot compare Kodak’s photo prints with bigger AIO printers like Epson WorkForce WF-2850 as it will be more like comparing apple to strawberry. But when compared to other instant print digital cameras, the Smile Classic is worth the thought.

Consumables and Paper Choice

How does the device print without ink cartridges or ribbons? Thanks to ZINK printing paper that makes everything happen. The Kodak Smile Classic uses ZINK photo paper that creates outstanding color and brilliant detail.

This photo paper ditches the need for film, ink cartridges, and toner, which means less waste you produce. The paper has some layers including adhesive back that enables you to stick the prints on any surfaces. Some of the layers are heat-sensitive and embedded with different colors.

For extended longevity, the photo paper is equipped with a glossy polymer overcoat to protect the surface. It is made to be tear resistant, water resistant, and smudge proof—touching the paper immediately after printing is not a problem!

Luckily, the starter pack of Kodak Smile Classic includes Kodak Zink photo paper in addition to a camera printer device, micro USB charging cable, Start Card, and warranty. This means you can start capturing and printing snapshots right away.

For replacement, the photo paper is sold in different pack variants that range from 10 to 40 sheets. Always remember that the package you choose may affect the running cost.

Wireless Connectivity

Bluetooth is the standard connectivity that lets you connect the printer with compatible Android and iOS mobile devices. Once connected, you can enjoy additional features brought by Kodak Smile Classic 2-in-1 App, download it on Google Play or App Store.

With the app, print easily from social media or camera roll. It also comes packed with full photo editing features, such as adding filters, borders, and stickers that help enhance your images before printing. As a bonus, this device highlights AR that enables you to add AR effects to still snapshots.

Other features to enjoy include social network sharing, photo synchronization, and remote capture. The least mentioned means you can place the camera at a distance and control the shutter for a wider shoot.

Kodak Smile Classic Battery and Power

The Smile Classic requires a battery to make it work. The manufacturer embeds a rechargeable Lithium ion battery with enough capacity to produce around 35 prints before the next charge. This capacity is considered enough to capture memorable moments, but it may be not if you are a selfie addict.

Charging the battery is not a big deal as it’s more like charging your smartphone. Simply plug the micro USB cable into the slot and leave for one to two hours for fully charged. Even if you are away from home, this instant camera printer can be a great photography companion.

The pair of camera and printer does create a cool device to capture your best moments. The Kodak Smile Classic seems a good bet to print snapshots on the go, yet it has a few drawbacks that make it less attractive. Here’s a closer look at the pros and cons.

Kodak Smile Classic Pros

  • Stylish Retro Design

This is a device that allows you to capture memorable moments with style. Coming with a unique and classic retro design, the Smile Classic brings throwback memories of your childhood. Even though it is not a pocket camera, it remains portable and travel-friendly.

  • Easy to Use

You can capture memorable moments and enjoy the prints only in five steps. Insert paper to tray, power on the camera and connect with your smartphone. Capture your best moments and add your favorite filters or stickers. When you are done, print the picture and stick it on scrapbooks or anywhere.

  • Print without Ink

Using ZINK technology, this device lets you print without ink. Instead, it uses premium-quality photo paper with embedded CMY colors that will melt once heated. No cartridges or toners means less waste! More importantly, no inks makes it easier to travel.

  • Large Photos

The Kodak Smile Classic highlights large photo prints at 3.25 inches by 4.5 inches. Compared to small camera printers available out there, this gadget offers the largest print. The bigger the photos, the more you enjoy it.

  • Full Set of Editing Features

Thanks to Kodak Classic 2-in-1 app that offers a full set of editing features. Whether you want to add stickers or add AR effect to still snapshots, the versatile app gives a lot of excitement to enhance photo-taking experience.

KODAK Smile Classic Cons

  • Inaccurate Colors

It’s hard to say that the amazing printer produces inaccurate colors. The captured photos are too pink-hued, which can be a bit disturbing to me. But it can be forgivable if you love that kind of aesthetic photos.

  • Rather Expensive Running Cost

Most instant printers come with rather expensive running costs and this device holds the tradition. However, the cost might vary depending on your print habit and paper package that you purchase. If you print a lot, you might have to spend pretty pennies.

Final Verdicts

I came to the conclusion that the Kodak Smile Classic is a good device that wraps a digital camera and instant printer. Featuring Zero Ink technology and retro classic design, the printer lets you capture moments and print with style. Not to mention it supports versatile app that is loaded with features.

Despite its expensive print cost and rather inaccurate colors, the Smile Classic is worth the thought. It can be a great companion to print anywhere and anytime, thanks to rechargeable battery that supports cordless printing.
